An Unexpected Lesson

                                           

“Lock and load your weapon soldier!” rang out over my helmet.

My fingers trembled as I unjammed this M-16 rifle--twice. The tick of stopwatch not far over my shoulder served only to annoy. Am I adapt at handling this weapon? That bloody tick, ticked off the tip of nerves like the quick flick of a lit match burning its tip with no recourse. 

Time’s up! A mild breeze ruffled my shirt as I stood in that foxhole. My boobs hit the grounds edge. I was short, but heck, ...
